Dolce & Gabbana The Lipstick Classic Cream Lipstick in Sassy 525

Overall Rating

I bought this lipstick at Herald Square Macy’s (NYC) without knowing a single thing about D&G cosmetics – I just fell in love with the color and decided to try it. This lipstick is everything a classic lipstick should be: it’s packaging is beautiful, the color is bold and provoking, and it’s quality is superb.

D&G Classic Cream lipstick is not cheap — $33.50, but it is not ridiculously expensive either if we consider that we’re paying for the brand as much as we do for the product. For example, Tom Ford’s lipsticks cost $50. D&G pricing is comparable to Dior’s and Chanel’s. They are very similar in quality too.

Packaging is stunning: the tube is classic retro gold which reminds me of an image of an expensive lipstick from my childhood when I saw how divinely beautiful ladies in the movies applied carmine red on their lips. It’s also sturdy and feels quite good in hands – sleek and compact. The tube has “Dolce & Gabbana” engraved on it.

Color Sassy 525 is as described on Sephora – “warm coral red”. It’s rich and bold, has some metallic sheen to it but its main thing is color – very saturated, exotically warm and luscious. I have a medium complexion with yellow undertones and this is one of the best reds I’ve ever owned. There is just enough coral to complement my skin color and at the same time enough red to make this color stand out. This color is more suited for warmer seasons: like spring and summer, and will work greatly with some tan and sun-kissed hair. With this lipstick I would definitely recommend using bronzer and coral/amber/peach/champagne blush. A good choice for a blush would be NARS blush in Orgasm or Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Incandescent Electra. I wouldn’t recommend using any eyeshadow because the lipstick itself is rather bold and should serve as a centerpiece of your makeup. However, if you do decide to go with eyeshadow, I’d recommend sticking to nude tones like cream or beige, maybe some copper. Nothing too bright and drastic.

The staying power of Classic Cream lipstick is pretty good, comparable to one of classic Dior and Guerlain lipsticks. It would survive a glass of champagne, but not the whole brunch. I noticed it’s a pattern for most lipsticks with saturated and bold colors. You have to re-apply them every forty minutes or so. The smell and taste of this lipstick are quite pleasant.

Classic Cream Lipstick is advertised as being ultra-moisturizing. I have to disagree with that. The lipstick is actually a bit drying. I solve the problem by scrubbing my lips first and applying lip balm underneath the lip color. It works fine for me but if you are really looking for a moisturizing high-end lipstick, I would suggest to consider Guerlain. From my experience, their lipsticks are the ones truly hydrating.

Overall, I am very happy with D&G Classic Cream lipstick although I do wish it were more moisturizing. However, the color is so beautiful that I am fine with it not providing enough moisture.
